I’m semi-retired but I occasionally write about topics that interest me, including philanthropy, tobacco control and psychedelic drugs. I’m preparing to start a Substack called The Best Laid Plans.

I was a senior writer at Fortune magazine from 1996 to 2009. Since then, I’ve contributed to magazines and newspapers, including The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Guardian, The Chronicle of Philanthropy, Mother Jones, Reason and Vox. I’ve written or co-authored four books.
