The company, started by an Idaho couple, was the people’s choice in the GE contest, winning the most votes and a $50,000 prize.
Scott Brusaw and his wife, Julie, want to build solar panels into the nation’s roads. The electricity they generate can be used to light up the roads at night, melt snow in the winter and, presumably, power other homes and businesses nearby with any leftover electricity. Scott is an engineer and he’s got an impressive advisory board but that’s no guarantee that the idea will work. The business model isn’t clear, and it will be interesting to see if GE or any of the venture capitalists who are part of the GE challenge opt to invest in Solar Roadways. I’m going to put in a call to Scott to talk about this, as well as reach out to a VC or two, but in the meantime, here’s audio of Scott talking about the award.
