Marc Gunther is a leading thinker, writer and speaker about business and sustainability. All of his work is animated by his belief that companies that make the world a better place—by serving their customers, their workers and their communities—will deliver superior results to their owners in the long run.

Marc is a contributing writer to FORTUNE magazine and the author of Faith and Fortune: How Compassionate Capitalism is Transforming American Business (Crown Business, 2004). He is conference chair of Brainstorm: Green, FORTUNE’s conference about business and the environment.

Marc has written cover stories for FORTUNE about the greening of Wal-Mart, Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson and spirituality in the workplace. He has also written about CEO Jeff Immelt’s efforts to reshape the values of General Electric, the business of carbon finance, the rise of corporate social responsibility, the zero-waste movement, genetically-modified rice, environmental activism, corporate governance, AIDS and gay rights in corporate America. He has profiled media mogul Sumner Redstone, shareholder activist Bob Monks, evangelical minister Rick Warren and talk-show host Jay Leno in FORTUNE.

Before joining FORTUNE in 1996, Marc worked for more than 20 years for newspapers including The Paterson (N.J.) News, The Hartford Courant, The Detroit News and The Detroit Free Press.

He is the author or co-author of three previous books: Basepaths: From the Minor Leagues to the Majors and Beyond (Scribners, 1984), Monday Night Mayhem: The Inside Story of Monday Night Football (William Morrow, 1988) with Bill Carter, and The House That Roone Built: The Inside Story of ABC News (Little Brown, 1994). Monday Night Mayhem became a movie starring John Turturro as Howard Cosell that was shown on TNT.

Marc has contributed to The New York Times and The Washington Post, among other publications. He has appeared on NBC, ABC, PBS, CNN and NPR. He speaks at conferences, corporate events and colleges.

Marc has a B.A. from Yale University, where he majored in English. He grew up in Croton-on-Hudson, New York.

Marc lives in Bethesda, Maryland, with his wife, Karen Schneider, a communications executive. He has two daughters, Sarah, a 2006 graduate of Wesleyan University who is program officer for East Africa at the American Jewish World Service, and Rebecca, a senior at Denison University. He is an active member of the Adat Shalom Reconstructionist Congregation in Bethesda and an avid (albeit slow) long-distance runner who has completed more than a dozen marathons.
