I think you are right: it's the economy! After five years of providing all electric transportation alternatives tour our community and not achieving anywhere near the success that we expected (except when gas prices went over $3.50 a gallon). I have asked myself "why" many times and, ruling out our own shortcomings and mistakes, the answer is pretty clear in my mind: It is NOT about the environment, or even saving money, it's about ego. It's about power and status and impressing our friends. It's about comfort and convenience. Sales of everything is down right now, and you can bet that when things are better the car companies will prosper once again. Right up until whatever climate or social crisis finally comes and makes us ashamed that we waited so long to change our habits. Who wants one horse when we can have 300? Oh, and I live in Portland, Oregon. So why doesn't the community support clean green no gasoline? It's not comfortable, powerful, or impressive enough for a spoiled and lazy society that will not change their habits to save the live-ability of their children's future.
