Aaron, I agree with you that the mainstream media continues to matter and, to a degree, shapes the agenda (although less now than ever). As far as Sarah Palin's op-ed is concerned, it was so riddled with mistakes and misunderstanding that The Post may have done its readers a service by reminding people of how shallow she is.

Marc - as we discussed last week, social media have been immensely influential in building a remarkable community focused on climate. And yet...I remain unconvinced that this is breaking through to the vast army of people who are undecided on whether or how to address climate. Those are the people who have to be reached if we are to have US legislation and support for a successor to Kyoto...let alone changed consumer behavior. My hunch is that Sarah Palin's ghastly op-ed in the Washington Post (shame on you Post) will reach as many people as the next 100 blogposts, and will reinforce opposition to climate action. So while we celebrate the rise of social media, it remains true that we are in a world in which BOTH social networks and mainstream media matter a great deal.

Marc,

Great observations. The media world is changing rapidly and it's exciting to watch. For most of this year, I've followed tweets (thanks to helpful hashtags) from various conferences I've been unable to attend. What I've noticed about COP15 is that I'm getting almost no news from the mainstream media. I'm following bloggers, tweeters and vloggers that I know to follow the conference. by the time it's in the paper or on TV, I've already read it a half dozen times. This is yet another example of why I don't think we should be too alarmed by the steady decline of the mainstream media.

Have fun in Copenhagen. I'm looking forward to your reports.
