I probably should thank Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg for finding me an apartment next week in Copenhagen—and for connecting me to a high school friend I’d lost track of many years ago.

Tamra Rosanes
I’m often delighted by the power of social media. Through Facebook, Twitter and this blog, I’ve learned a lot, met new people, reconnected with old friends and found story ideas. But this is the first time social media solved a frustrating bricks-and-mortar problem for me.
On the day after Thanksgiving, I blogged about the fact that I was going to Copenhagen to report on the climate talks and host an event for the Coalition for Rainforest Nations. But hotel rooms are all but impossible to find–the nearest one I could locate was in Sweden–and, at the suggestion of my daughter Sarah, I went online to seek help or advice. That’s how I found Tamra Rosanes, one of Denmark’s most popular country music singers.
Actually, Tamra found me. We were connected by a mutual friend, Beth Davis, on Facebook. And within a day or two, Tamra kindly had found a friend who has agreed to rent me his apartment in Copenhagen.
How cool is that?
Way back when, I knew Tamra as Tammy Miller. We lived on the same street, Glengary Road, in Croton-on-Hudson, New York, and graduated from Croton Harmon High School in the same year. Then we went our separate ways. I don’t know how she became a country music star in Denmark, but I will find out soon. (Croton was better known for its folk music back in the 1960s. Lee Hays of The Weavers lived in our neighborhood.)
Even better, Tamra will be performing during COP15 because she has released a new CD of music about the environment. As she writes on her website:
I have released a new album “A Green Tomorrow Today”- 10 optimistic songs in the shade of green, which focus on environmental challenges and our own reponsibility to be active. Part of the profits will go to “Learning about Forests”; an international educational organisation where Danish school children plant trees as part of the solution to CO2 emissions.(Replant the Planet/Genplant Planeten). I have been active in environmental issues throughout my life, in the U.S.A. where I was born and raised, (volunteer crew member on Pete Seeger`s environmental sailing ship “The Clearwater” ) and also in Denmark where I now reside.
Cue the music. You’ve Got to Have Friends or It’s A Small World. Better yet, you can download a song called On the Road to Copenhagen from Tamra’s new CD..
Thanks, by the way, to Joel Makower, Pamela Bonney, Chad Tragakis and Phyllis Lerner who also offered help finding housing in Copenhagen.

great story marc… thanks for sharing it, and have a great time in copenhagen.
I’ll second William’s comments…and am intrigued by how Tamra became a country music star. Please share details. I also am looking forward to your coverage of Copenhagen. Hope you have a good time.
Marc,
Nice story about connecting with old friends.
Great to hear of your work on reporting on climate change. Tamra’s a very talented musician. Croton was full of talent-musicians, writers, scientists , artists and teachers to mention a few.
Be well.
