Good to see innovation in the mining industry from Eurocantera and ethical sourcing from companies like Cartier. There was a lot of activity in this space when the Blood Diamond movie came out a few years back, but it seemed to slip off the radar soon after.

Hopefully more focus is placed on it once more and responsible parties are held accountable.

Any perceived threat to a luxury brand has to be taken seriously, so one can understand the branded jewelry industry’s attempts to deflect pressure by ensuring it is seen to be doing the right thing.

The electronics industry, which depends on obscure minerals found in areas of conflict, provides a better case study on how to deal with the issues in a methodical way. Its work, through the Global e-Sustainability Initiative (GeSI) and the Electronic Industry Citizenship Coalition (EICC) shows great promise.

(Interest declared: we have worked for both GeSI and EICC).

Next in the spotlight will be the auto industry for its sourcing of Rare Earths used in batteries driving electric vehicles.
