Marc: Both political parties ran on climate platforms in 2008 with some internal differences. Current GOP members in the Congress are seeking to avoid ownership of any solutions on critical national issues or impeding any countervailing results: such as ARRA, energy & climate policy, healthcare, social security, banking reform, jobs based recovery, or Middle East. They do so at their own peril. The 2010 mid year elections will not center on red vs blue issues in the states but whether incumbents of whatever party are effective, results oriented, constructive and forward looking for their constituents and the country. This is borne out by the fastest growing sector in the political landscape today- the independents. The voters will not be fooled again because they already know the magic for this country is in the middle and not the extremes.

Marc, Thanks for being boldly political. We need your voice in that role.
Now how about writing the same point of view for health care...how can this not be a bipartisan effort to fix what is so clearly broken? I understand folks who worry that things could be worse for them as indoviduals, but what consumer is actually happy with the status quo? We need YOUR voice.

Marc,

Very thoughtful post and spot-on. I wish that more Republicans would remember Ronald Reagan's words: "What is a conservative after all, but one who conserves."

Republicans must be real conservatives, be responsible, and pitch in to help the country deal with climate change, which puts our country's prospects at serious risk on so many levels. They must do more than oppose Democrats' legislation. They must put forward sound ideas for reducing carbon pollution in ways that drive forward advanced energy technologies and business innnovation.

Likewise, Democrats must put aside partisanship and seek middle ground on nuclear energy in order to persuade a "critical mass" of Republicans - pun sort of intended - to support balanced climate legislation.

That middle ground is out there and can be found if enough responsible Republicans and Democrats put country above party.

If it meant real action on climate, I could live with nukes. Metaphorically, at least. Physically, I'd have to keep my fingers crossed.

Nukes scare me. But climate change scares me a *lot* more.
