Seems to me the Green Century Balanced Fund blends the business of making money with building a better world – at least on paper. Nothing wrong with making money and investing for the future in the Good Business World. I understand your skeptism of the “green veneer” in money management. Yet I think it serves us well to focus on the positive here – something is really shifting in the world of high finance when a mutual fund states its purpose is to reduce carbon footprint for big business pollutors and use that common good goal as a high profit venture. Yes this is a good idea, but having green greed seems a little hypocritical to me. Gred, and the ever present drive to have more and more of everything, is what has caused the problems in the first place. That said, there is no way we’ll get rid of the stock market in a hurry, so why not splash a green veneer over it.

It’s great mutual funds are measuring their carbon footprints. I personally believe that we should include our investments in the inventory of our personal carbon footprints. (CO2 Emissions per share per annum might be a more useful metric than emissions per $1M revenue) This is a first step, and once we start measuring, we can start reducing. Here’s hoping for the first carbon-negative mutual fund!
