Finding enough biomass is always going to be the problem for "Advanced Biofuels" companies, because plants only store a tiny fraction of the sun's energy, far less than PV, so the biomass reasources are spread far and wide. On top of that, biofuels need to compete with many other (possibly more profitable) uses for the same feedstock.

There's a lot more to making advanced Biofuels work than building a better bug.

Hi Marc,
As you say, fossil fuels and nukes get big federal subsidies. My stock portfolio's investments in renewables have been going mostly nowhere for years--because they can't compete with the playing field tilted toward the fossil fuels and nukes. We've got to more than level the playing field, if the planet is to be liveable for us and future generations. Whether the investment money is private, public, or both, we need it--fast. And if the federal government owns a big stake? Well, that represents the collective stake of all of us, so we own it, too.
I produced a podcast about the Qteros project (back before it was named that) for TechCast at UMass, for the university's Office of Commercial Ventures and Intellectual Property. I talked with Professor Susan Leschine, SunEthanol CEO Jef Sharpe and venture capitalist Tripp Peake. Check it out at http://www.umasstechcast.org/2008/01/techcast-at-umass-1-the-q-microbe/
