Hi Marc,

Happy to have connected on Twitter! (mvellandi) - I have found it great for using it as a wire service to link to more valuable content, in addition to some amazing conversations with a select number of bright individuals from various professions.

As the community manager for a sustainability conference this year, it's going to be a huge responsibility for me to 'Tweet responsibly', as there'll be many unable to attend yet watching what I say.
With an increased number of followers, comes increased responsibility to objectivity and reader value. At this point for me since Twitter is a professional networking & smart-thinking sharing platform, there is very little room for the personal opinion and 'what I'm doing' tweets.

If I can help you make the most of twitter, please feel free to reach out. As this platform grows and new influencers come on board, research & productivity will become very important best practices for advanced users.

Cheers

Thanks Marc... I've been toying with the idea of starting to tweet... now I'm in no hurry. "Toy"ing is apparently the right word.

Excellent post Mark. Twitter is not journalism, though for me it's reminiscent of the "flash" we used to send out on Reuters on important news. A one sentence item - sourced - "Space shuttle explodes on takeoff, NASA says" was one memorable one from many years ago. That was followed by a three para story within 5 minutes and a longer item right away. Twitter may not be journalism but it's as you say a way to point people to the right place. And of course, the need to be right, in the first place...

I read this article because of the title -- ready to argue. When Marc restated the real title -- twitter isnt a good journalistic tool, I didn't need to argue any more. Interesting insights. I would have said that 140 chars forces the point to come out, but when you are "in the mix" trying to capture the dynamic flow, it's going to get bogged down. It is, however, up to the tweeps to confirm facts and follow up before accepting tweets as facts.

Thanks

I found this article via Twitter, and it looks like you're just figuring out where Twitter works or does not work. As you mention, Twitter is not the right vehicle for delivering long-form journalism, but is great for quick links to other stories on blogs or news outlets (like how I found this story). Your title "...bad for journalism" is a bit of flamebait. Anyway! Great to hear updates from Brainstorm Green, even if only short tweets! Hopefully a longer article will follow.
