Thanks for this post Marc. I spoke on panel in October on green business/marketing and referenced SC Johnson as a company that was making real commitments in this area. Needless to say others at the conference thought I was nuts. So, this feels like validation!

I agree, full marks to SC Johnson. I really don't understand why ANY company is allowed to have secret items in their products, be they cleaning, body products or food. My wife suffers from a condition called Celiac, a violent type of allergy to wheat gluten. I cannot buy any product that uses "Maltodextrin" or "Modified food Starch" because the FDA does not require manufactures to tell what kind of food or malt is being used. Her allergy is so severe that she actually became ill from using topical products with wheat in them.
I understand that business has trade secrets and all, but for the buyer to be able to beware, we MUST be aware of what we are buying.
I think it's great that companies are starting to do this, I am just shocked that they are not forced by law.

Full marks to SC Johnson for providing greater clarity on what’s inside their products. But before this great company gets all the accolades, do remember that Unilever provided a similar level of disclosure on its website nearly three years ago. We played a small role in helping them do this, especially in explaining what the chemical terms mean and the exacting processes that are used to produce safe products.

Hi Marc,
About a month ago, Clorox made a similar announcement saying it would also disclose more information about their ingredients, beyond mere msds sheets. See http://www.csrwire.com/News/14541
They didn't make much fanfare about it though, adding a special microsite like SC Johnson. In my reasonable assessment, it appears both companies are giving out the same amount of info (please correct me if I'm wrong). Additionally, I did a quick website analysis on ingredient communications among the major CPG firms; if interested see: http://tr.im/hpqb

But truly, thanks for the additional background info on SC Johnson, that truly helps build more understanding behind the scenes, and obviously much better than a press release rehash like I tend to read on most green news websites.
