Marc! Sorry for the name spelling blunder, I mean absolutely no disrespect; on the contrary, I intend all the respect in the world!

Preston, I agree fully that there are ways to reduce energy consumption without curbing out standard of living--the question is, how does that message get out to the public. Revamping the way utilities are regulated, as California is, is one way to start.

Mark, this is a fantastic article--a well-rounded piece laying out all sides. As a Texan, I'm so disturbed by TXU's brazen plan. They're basically pimping Texas for a huge shareholder return sans consideration of the externalities of dirty coal. If we let TXU frame the debate as a supply-demand situation, people will give in, not wanting to have blackouts like California did in the past. But if we're honest, that McKinsey report is telling: as an entire population, there are things we can do to reduce consumption of energy to lessen the burden on energy. We're talking CFLs, insulation, windows, energy audits, etc. Maybe make energy audits tax deductible and get people to discover ways to use less energy. We've got to attack this problem from another angle or else TXU will be laughing to the bank, while the rest of us are dying in perfectly lit, monstrous houses full of mercury and pollution.
