Marc, I read those stories too and was appalled. It's a shameful situation, but probably won't be changed anytime soon. Soccer, anyone?
How about "millions of Americans" rather than "American men"?

Well said, Clint. The other problem is that there are no guaranteed contracts in the NFL. So the athlete who refuses to "play hurt" is at risk of being cut from the team. Not so in baseball and (as far as I know) the NBA.

There always will be a gray area betweeen personal responsibility and management oversight, but in this case, the system works against the player whose "loyalty" to the team is exploited with full knowledge that personal sacrifice often means holding on to his job and multi-million dollar salary. As long as the NFL has a Super Bowl built on on Won-Loss records, the health ands well-being of its athletes will remain a secondary consideration. This gray area unfortunately is at the expense of a player's gray matter, and ultimately, his life.
